Mission
Our mission is to save our natural heritage, create jobs, and help young people envision a future in Maine.

The Maine Farm Enterprise Schools recognize that Maine’s cultural, ecological, and economic heritage is undergoing dramatic change.  As the traditional working landscapes of Maine continue to disappear, there is an intensifying need to nurture smaller scale, local schools and enterprises that are sustained by and for people within our local communities.  MFES sees to integrate what we’ve learned from a wide variety of successful schools and small enterprises in a context that produces better results for students, parents, and communities.

Our goals are:

  • To nurture in our students and communities a sense of responsibility, competence, and caring.
  • To integrate the worlds of education, enterprise, and environmental sustainability.
  • To work collaboratively with families, community members and social service agencies to solve real problems.
  • To produce students who see themselves as stewards of the environment with the will, skill, capacity, and knowledge to contribute to the greater good.
  • To produce sustainable enterprises and jobs that contribute to local economies and offer young people a vision of a future in Maine.
  • To model replicable relationships and structures that link philanthropic capacity and public school funding in a way that closes, rather than widens, the achievement gap.
  • To function as community center and laboratory for study, reflection, and action around the questions of environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
